Rodzina obejmuje kilkaset gatunków występujących w Ameryce (Stany Zjednoczone (włącznie z Navassą), Meksyk, Belize, Gwatemala, Salwador, Honduras, Nikaragua, Kostaryka, Panama, Kuba, Bahamy, Kajmany, Jamajka, Turks i Caicos, Haiti, Dominikana, Portoryko, Brytyjskie Wyspy Dziewicze, Wyspy Dziewicze Stanów Zjednoczonych, Anguilla, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Kitts i Nevis, Antigua i Barbuda, Montserrat, Gwadelupa, Dominika, Martynika, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent i Grenadyny, Barbados, Grenada, Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Kolumbia, Trynidad i Tobago, Wenezuela, Gujana, Surinam, Gujana Francuska, Brazylia, Ekwador, Peru, Boliwia i Paragwaj). Wiele gatunków zostało szeroko introdukowanych lub z powodzeniem skolonizowało obszary nieobjęte ich historycznymi zasięgami.
